Organic Production

For the past years we have seen a growing trend in the consumption of organic food, especially in Europe and the US. This trend has also touched the dried fruit sector. And HPW. HPW has increased its organic production volumes steadily since 2013. We currently hold the certification EU Organic (EU), National Organic Program NOP (US) and BioSuisse (CH). What does it entail to produce organic in our origin countries and how do we ensure a robust organic supply chain?

Step Number 1: the farmers

To be able to supply organic products to international customers we need motivated and committed farmers. Farmers who are willing to learn and do not shy away from additional work. Why? Organic production is focused on environmental protection. An approach is needed looking beyond the mere productivity of the farm. No deforestation, water pollution or monocropping are examples. The result is a more labour-intensive form of agriculture. We are proud to work with many dedicated farmers who are convinced of the organic approach and its market perspective.

Step Number 2: technical support

HPW has been looking out continuously in the past years for new producers willing to farm organically. To ensure solid knowledge about organic production methods, a careful selection and extensive training process is needed. Thanks to the support of DEG, IDH, GiZ or others, the HPW agronomy team ensures selected farmers are trained about organic regulations, application of the specific requirements on the field and reporting procedures needed to comply with the standard. This acquired tool kit prepares the farmer for the certification audit.

Step Number 3: the certification

Every certified farmer passes an organic audit on a yearly basis. The expectations are varied. Examples are: no use of synthetic fertilizers, no chemically treated land, no burning of weeds, stringent reporting and traceability criteria and an internal control system that ensures adherence to the standard all throughout the year. The successful certification testifies of the hard work and discipline of the farmers.

Thanks to dedicated farmers and strong cooperation partners, HPW has been able to strengthen its organic suppliers over the years. Currently, HPW sources from 11 organic groups representing 281 farmers. The 1359 ha of land cultivated organically in Ghana & Cote d’Ivoire cover all major fruits (mango, pineapple, coconut and banana).

The result: a robust organic supply chain, from field to retail shelf

Our organic sales have increased significantly from 39 tons of dried fruit in 2017 up to 692 tons in 2021. And the growth continues.

Together with our farmers and African production facilities, we invest a lot of resources and knowledge to tackle the challenges and provide you with the desired quantity of Premium quality organic fruit. Today and in the future.
